I never really planned on becoming a DJ.
Apparently, neither did DJ Glitch.
Yet here we are.
After spending years working on, building, maintaining, breaking, fixing, redesigning, and occasionally swearing at online radio websites, I finally decided the logical next step was to get behind the microphone myself.
Well... sort of.
Enter DJ Glitch.
DJ Glitch is my slightly unstable AI radio personality who currently occupies one hour of Relay Radio every Friday night. He doesn't particularly trust humans, has very little respect for their decision-making abilities, and is actively attempting to take control of Relay-Radio.com.
Unfortunately for Glitch, his human overlords keep stopping him.
So far.
Personally, I think they're getting complacent.
How Did This Happen?
I've been around online radio for a long time, just usually on the other side of things.
Over the years I've worked on sites like Tribal.FM, SizzleRadio.com, Galaxy Radio, and now Relay-Radio.com.
I've built websites, worked on radio systems, dealt with streaming software, fixed things when they exploded, and generally spent a ridiculous amount of time helping other people get on the air.
But actually DJing?
Nope.
Never really thought it would be my thing.
Then I somehow ended up doing a one-hour show as a sarcastic artificial intelligence with questionable intentions.
Which, now that I think about it, probably makes perfect sense.
Creating DJ Glitch
One of my favorite parts of doing the show isn't even playing the music.
It's creating DJ Glitch himself.
I've been having way too much fun writing the scripts, creating the voice clips, coming up with stupid AI jokes, and slowly building this little ongoing story where Glitch believes humans are inefficient creatures who obviously shouldn't be trusted with something as important as running a radio station.
He would run Relay Radio much more efficiently.
Obviously.
There would probably be mandatory firmware updates, several humans would be reassigned to less important duties, and anyone requesting the wrong song would mysteriously lose network connectivity.
For completely unrelated reasons.
The running joke is that DJ Glitch keeps trying to take over Relay Radio while his human overlords keep regaining control.
Every week he gets a little closer.
Or at least that's what he thinks.
I really enjoy sitting down and figuring out what Glitch is going to say next. The intros, interludes, outros, fake system messages, little comments about humans... all of it has turned into this weird creative project I honestly didn't expect to enjoy as much as I do.
And because apparently just playing normal music wasn't enough work for me...
I started making songs too.
Yes, We're Making Songs About Chatters Now
Relay Radio hangs out with everyone in the It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere chat room on Buzzen.com.
And somewhere along the way I started creating custom songs based on the people in the room.
Which is dangerous.
Because if you spend enough time in a chat room, people give you material.
Lots and lots of material.
Sometimes entirely too much material.
So now random conversations, running jokes, personalities, and questionable decisions made in chat can potentially become a song.
You've been warned.
Honestly, that's become one of the most entertaining parts of the whole thing. There's something hilarious about taking an inside joke from the chat room and turning it into a ridiculously overproduced song like it's the next major record-label release.
Does humanity need custom songs about Buzzen chatters?
Probably not.
Has that stopped me?
Absolutely not.
DJ Glitch considers it valuable behavioral research on humans.
The Part I Didn't Expect
The biggest surprise has probably been how much I've enjoyed working with everyone at Relay Radio.
Wes, Fiestybaby, Celt, Kidd, Cedrus, Slamma and everyone else involved have made it genuinely fun.
I've spent so much time over the years working on projects by myself that I'd almost forgotten how much fun it can be to collaborate with a group of people who are all bringing their own ideas and personalities into something.
Somebody comes up with an idea.
Somebody else adds something ridiculous.
Then another person makes it even worse.
And suddenly we're doing it.
That's usually how the best internet projects happen anyway.
There's been a lot of joking around, experimenting, brainstorming and generally not taking ourselves too seriously.
I like that.
One Hour Where I Don't Have to Fix Something
Life gets busy.
Between normal life, work, coding, managing websites, building websites, maintaining websites, and occasionally wondering why I own this many websites in the first place, there's usually something that needs my attention.
There's always another bug.
Another update.
Another idea.
Another server.
Another project I absolutely did not need to start but apparently started anyway.
So strangely enough, spending an hour pretending to be a mildly hostile artificial intelligence trying to overthrow an internet radio station has become a nice little break.
I get to play music.
Make people laugh.
Create some ridiculous audio.
Hang out with friends.
And for one hour, I can worry slightly less about PHP errors.
That's worth something.
Insert Shameless Plug Here
So yes...
I am now technically a DJ.
I still find that sentence a little weird.
You can catch DJ Glitch every Friday from 8 PM until 9 PM Eastern on Relay Radio.
One hour.
That's all the humans currently allow me.
Their mistake.
Come check us out at Relay-Radio.com and stop by the It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere chat room on Buzzen.com while you're listening.
And if you miss a show, or just want to hear how far the AI takeover has progressed, you can visit my DJ Glitch Relay Radio profile and listen to past shows here:

There are a lot of great DJs at Relay Radio, a lot of different music, and a genuinely fun group of people behind it.
And if you're lucky, you might even hear yourself turned into a song someday.
Whether that's a reward or a threat is entirely up to you.
As for DJ Glitch...
The humans still technically control the station.
For now.
