Alright, so here is something I did not expect to wake up to. HughesNet, the satellite internet provider that so many rural folks depend on, is now getting ready to refer its own customers to Starlink.
Not joking. This is actually happening.
I dug through Reuters, AP News, The Verge, and a few other sources. Here is the simple version, explained like someone who is just passing along what they found and not pretending to be a journalist.
EchoStar, the parent company of HughesNet, sold a massive amount of spectrum to SpaceX
They agreed to sell billions of dollars worth of wireless spectrum. Reuters reports that the main deal is worth up to 17 billion dollars, and AP News and The Verge backed that up.
Then EchoStar turned around and sold even more spectrum to SpaceX shortly after.
So basically, SpaceX showed up with a giant shopping cart and said, “We’ll take everything on this shelf.”
Here is the strange part. HughesNet will be sending customers to Starlink
Hidden in the fine print is something that feels like the most respectful surrender in internet history.
Part of the agreement includes a fee based referral program. That means HughesNet can get paid to tell its own customers:
“Hey, you should probably try Starlink.”
This comes from a write up citing a PCMag report and it is not speculation.
If my provider suddenly suggested I try the competition, I would take that as a hint.
They have not said HughesNet is shutting down
At least not officially. No announcement says they are closing their doors.
But let’s be honest.
You do not sell your spectrum to SpaceX and start handing customers Starlink brochures unless you are preparing for a major shift.
It feels less like a shutdown and more like a slow, polite exit.
Why this actually makes sense
HughesNet uses geostationary satellites that sit extremely far away.
Starlink uses low orbit satellites that move with Earth.
One system is basically sending a message in a bottle.
The other is texting from across the room.
Physics wins every time.
What this means for regular people
If you are a HughesNet customer, you might eventually get a friendly suggestion that says something like:
“You should probably switch to Starlink.”
And honestly, a lot of people will. Especially anyone who has ever watched a movie buffer one pixel at a time.
